Cannabinoids are compounds found in the cannabis plant that interact with the receptors of the endocannabinoid system. This system is believed to help regulate a range of bodily functions, particularly in the central nervous system and immune system. While cannabinoids are not commonly found in our backyard gardens or grocery store shelves, there are other plants that contain compounds similar to cannabinoids. The sunflower genus Helichrysum contains phytocannabinoids similar to cannabigerol (CBG) called amorfrutins. Echinacea, a plant used therapeutically for thousands of years, contains cannabimimetic compounds called N-alkylamides (NAA) that activate CB2 cannabinoid receptors.
Black truffles have been discovered to contain anandamide, an endocannabinoid found and produced by our body. Black pepper, a common household spice native to South India and Vietnam, contains beta-caryophyllene (BCP), a terpene found in cannabis. Cocoa, the key ingredient in chocolate, contains beneficial N-acylethanolamines (NAE). The electric daisy contains N-isobutylamides which can cause a strange sensation and is used to soothe dental discomfort and treat an upset stomach.
Kava, an extract made from a plant native to the Pacific Islands called Piper methysticum, contains a compound called “yangonine” which interacts with the CB1 receptors of the endocannabinoid system.Hemp extract contains less than 0.1% THC and CBD can be derived from hemp or from non-hemp plants. Hemp is defined as any part of the cannabis sativa plant that does not contain more than 0.3% of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). After assembling the complete genome of a new breed of cannabis, researchers discovered that “hemp” plants high in CBD have a genome that is mostly marijuana.Negative effects have been associated with CBD consumption so people who are breastfeeding are advised to avoid it. Scientists conducted a study on 120 current users which revealed their amounts of THC and CBD.
D-9-THC caused transient psychotic symptoms and increased levels of anxiety, intoxication and sedation while CBD had no significant effect on behavior or on these parameters. If consumers experience adverse effects from products containing THC or CBD they should call the local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222 or 911 or seek medical attention at the local emergency room and inform health care providers about the ingredients in the products they have consumed.
